The simple joys of CPK (Carmel Mountain Ranch)

CPK has survived, but how? Nice varied menu, kid friendly, unique pizza flavors, high quality fresh pizza crust, and booze for Mom and Dad. Ms S and I had mommy-daughter dates here (at the counter) for years. There was no wait, she could have her noodles, I could have a glass of wine, we could watch the guys make pizza....

Grange (The Citizen Hotel, Sacramento)

Grange was pretty much exactly the the upscale trendy restaurant we were looking for in Sacramento. The interior is full of light, wood, and glass. Just the place to go feel grown up. Ms S was taking Instagram photos like a fiend. Beware of the bench seating though, it is a little low relative to the table height. Their Old...

Relaxation

Never underestimate the restorative power of a cold drink, a quiet couch, and a movie. Sometimes it feels like cheating… Why can I not allow myself to enjoy this?

Ettore’s Bakery & Cafe (Sacramento)

One of my uncles favorite places so of course we had to make a stop. Really top notch quality, lots of seating, nice patio. Serves both Bakery and Cafe items. Wish we had a place like this near us. And a nice little (expensive) resale shop down the way for your after breakfast stroll. Ms S loved her cinnamon roll...

Obo’ Italian Table and Bar (Sacramento)

Wow wow wow. This is what we come to Sacramento for. Obo’ is one of the newest in the Sellands family which also includes the famed Kitchen (which alas we have not yet been to). So you already know the food will be fabulous. The interior is bright and charming. The front case distracts with gorgeous salads. Tortellini with shrimp,...

Nick’s Dessert Diner (Sacramento)

Did someone say cake? This place is as good as it looks. Just don’t go if you’re in a hurry. The line is long but you need that time to decide what to get. Not a place for quiet conversation either, but the whole world will pass thru these doors if you wait long enough. This is a great place...

Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento)

My gentle readers already know that I am not a big fan of museums. I don’t have a lot to say about art. The only way I know how to evaluate art is to ask, would this look good on my living room wall? – which is not the purpose of True Art. Ernest Briggs Abstract nothingness yet still compelling...

Meze (San Diego Gaslamp District)

Think Greek food, Cohn restaurant style. Beautiful presentation, delicious food, street side dining. Very enjoyable quiet lunch on the sidewalk patio in a less raucous part of the Gaslamp. The mixed kabob plate with lamb, beef, chicken, and shrimp was well enough for two. The Sangria wasn’t bad (hint of brandy) but we like Costco’s big liter bottle of Sangria...

One Paseo (Del Mar)

The coolest thing by far at One Paseo is this enormous tree trunk for the kids to play on. Other than its a mall trying desperately to draw in Millenials and hipsters.

Din Tai Fung (UTC, San Diego)

There’s a sizeable number of of “meh” reviews of Din Tai Fung on Google Maps, and I think the reason why is that folks don’t realize just how good these dumplings are. Go eat dumplings somewhere else (and you should), like Tasty Noodle House or Dumpling Inn, then come back here. You’ll then be able to better appreciate the fineness...

New York eating 2019

Natsumi Japanese restaurant. On Times Square and only 2 dollar signs which was shocking but then perhaps unsurprisingly the food was below average. Xi’an Fine Foods. Consistently excellent. I still enjoyed my #9 Pork Zha Jiang noodles. The noodles are definitely on the thicker side, I wish they were thinner. But the ground pork in its spicy sauce was outstanding....

Peter Luger (Brooklyn, NYC)

Waiter: “Well done,” he says dubiously. A little louder: “Well done.” “Yes.” I say to the waiter. “Well done.” I try a different angle. “We have a bit of a dilemma, I want it well done and he wants it medium.” “Well why don’t you get a steak for 2, medium, and a single steak well done?” “We’ll think about...

Google, Alexa And Siri Warning: Millions At Risk From Nasty New Scam Calls

https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2019/08/18/nasty-new-scam-alert-for-anyone-using-google-alexa-or-siri-to-make-calls/#5eb539505e65 “The Better Business Bureau warns that even seemingly legitimate, familiar businesses can be drawn into this voice assistant scam. “You need the phone number for a company, so you ask your home’s smart device to find and dial it for you. But when the company’s ‘representative’ answers— it turns out the ‘representative’ isn’t from the company at all.” If...

The Mustang

And then after you watch the horsey movies in my last post, you’ve gotta see The Mustang. Powerful performances.
