Latest charm quilt
Yet another ebay find. There’s many, many quilt tops for sale on ebay but they’re not all of similar quality. It’s really a crime what these sell for (typically $25-150), it doesn’t represent, at all, the time put into them.
This top was hand pieced from one inch squares. No sewing machine! It’s mind boggling, the effort that went into this.
Note that this quilt is unfinished. There’s no backing or batting yet, just the top. That’s the pieces I will add to create the “sandwich” then I will sew thru the layers, quilting them together.
91 squares go into each block. And prepare to be blown away, there’s 7x9x91 = 5733 one inch squares in this quilt top!
The color arrangement of each block are exquisite. This must have been an experienced quilt maker. I just love the energy of scrap quilts and the thought of making beauty from bits and bobs, under great constraints. There is something highly satisfying about that.
The next step is picking fabrics for the border and the backing. It’s a challenge to pick fabric to match these olde timey feedsack prints. They do still print these patterns but the fabric looks new and not aged. For this quilt I’ll want some darker prints to really frame the mid tones of the blocks. Off to the only place in San Diego worth going, Rosie’s Calico Cupboard!
Yes, enough knitting and crocheting for me. Time to switch hobbies.
