Stay on a happening and busy Plaza like the Pantheon or Piazza Navona.
Take time to take in the sights and absorb the ambience.
I have mixed feelings about tours. They provide invaluable information and context. But they rush you thru. I am reduced to taking crooked pictures out of bus windows.
