Ancient fabrics

My fellow OCDers will appreciate the need to keep my hands busy. This has never been so true as the last few months, as this fall has been hellacious for my family on at least 4 fronts, simultaneously. I think we are thru the worst of it. My meditation skills, which are really skills in keeping calm, really have come...

Dumplings in spicy chile oil

Quite possibly my favorite Chinese dish, dumplings in chile oil. The chile oil is really a paste of chile and sichuan pepper. Dumplings make a great foil for intensely flavored sauces (like Chinese vinegar and sliced raw ginger on Xiao Long Bao, another legendary combination). Here’s some great places to try them (in no particular order): ZEN Asian Bistro (Carmel...

Fish District (Carmel Mountain Ranch)

The standout here is the fish. Always fresh and nice big portions. The salmon burger was good, but they should cut the piece so it is more bun shaped. A long crosscut piece with both ends sticking out of the bun is just too unwieldy to eat. And too much bun doesn’t have any fish. Mr A got the swordfish...

The Brigantine (Poway)

Just a nice little grownup place to have a drink and a snack. We liked the swordfish tacos better than the blackened Mahi Tacos. And we could even split one plate for gosh sakes, we don’t need to eat that much. I’ve also enjoyed 067 Bistro over in RSF as well, it’s a bar but with great grilled sandwiches. Because...

Big ol’ jet airliner

Goodbye to all my friends at homeGoodbye to people I’ve trustedI’ve got to go out and make my wayI might get rich you know I might bet bustedBut my heart keeps calling me backwardsAs I get on the 707Ridin’ high I got tears in my eyesYou know you got to go through hellBefore you get to heaven

Poke House and Verve Coffee (Santa Cruz)

Quite decent poke on Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz. The spicy tuna and regular tuna were quite nice – not frozen. Very nice rice. Recommended. And chicken on the menu for your little ones. Finally, a family friendly poke place. Even better, Verve coffee across the street for your Macchiato dessert! Although I’m struggling to find an Espresso Tonic...

Travels by Narrowboat (Amazon Prime) – the virtues of slow living

I discovered this show a few weeks ago on Amazon Prime and I quickly got hooked. Kevin’s narration is so raw, honest, and genuine. There is something hypnotic and addictive about watching the English canal miles chug by, listening to chug chug chug of the boats tiny motor. Kevin has a great eye for detail and for wildlife that makes...

Raki Raki (Convoy St, Kearney Mesa)

Man oh man. I wish we hadn’t waited so long to come back here. Tonkotsu Underbelly Ramen. With Akadama spice ball. Mr A threw the whole ball in. This ball of spicy ground peppers worked perfectly to sharpen the unctuous broth. Sesame Tofu Don. Spicy, crunchy, and deeply satisfying. Amazing rice. I wish I knew what brand they use. Mizu...

Grub Burgers (Carmel Mountain Ranch)

Just too greasy for us. But if you like an indoor outdoor pub, this is the place for you! The grilled sourdough burger and the Bacon Love #9 were pretty darn greasy and made it hard to finish. Tasted good tho. Ms S says the Harlem Chicken Tenders aren’t as good as Islands. I think she just prefers less batter.

Thyme in the Ranch (Rancho Santa Fe)

Cute little breakfast place with a surprisingly large menu. Feast your eyes on the desserts in the case; drool over the whole pies on the bakers stand. You can also order sandwiches, soups, and quiches. They even have a continental breakfast menu with toast and jam which is much more special than it sounds – high quality jam, delicious buttered...

Season liberally

A Spice Company Spent $92,000 on Pro-Impeachment Facebook Ads in a Week https://nyti.ms/2OFxBQF “The New York Times reported in 2006 that Mr. Penzey had started a food magazine that touched on prison reform, immigration policy and international adoption. He lost customers after his first issue featured a gay couple — two men who had triplets via a surrogate mother — long...

One 2 Go Thai (Encinitas)

Pad Grapao, delicious and just the way it’s made in Bangkok. This whole place reminds me of the tiny Bangkok restaurants we ate at. If it only had a rickety one foot wide staircase up to an even tinier second level, then it would be exactly like Bangkok. Larb Gai. Opinions were split whether this was better than Pai Lin...
