Really interesting thread on reddit right now in r/askscience discussing the Spanish flu and coronavirus. The Spanish flu is thought to have jumped from horses to people when 1M horses were shipped from US to Europe for WW1. The Spanish flu is thought to have killed more than 15M people. “The initial...

Meze Greek Fusion (Gaslamp San Diego)

Another very satisfying meal at Meze 8n the late afternoon. We’ve gotten in the habit of late breakfast and early dinner giving plenty of hobby time before bed. Greek meatballs with lots of cumin seed. Red pepper hummus. And flaming shrimp and saganaki cheese!

Jaleo, Disney Springs

We have been fortunate enough to have visited Spain several times and have become big fans of Spanish food. One of our favorite Spanish restaurants in the US is Jaleo. We love the Las Vegas location in the Cosmopolitan, and tonight we visited the location in Walt Disney World in the Disney Springs shopping center. Spanish food is still a...

Older patients at much higher risk

“An analysis of 44,672 coronavirus patients in China whose diagnoses were confirmed by laboratory testing has found that 1,023 had died by Feb. 11. That’s a fatality rate of 2.3 percent. That is far higher than the mortality rate of the seasonal flu, with which the new coronavirus has sometimes been compared. Thirty percent of those who died were in...

Wuhan coronavirus 2019-nCoV

https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/01/27/coronavirus-uncertainty-spreads-but-investors-shou.aspx “… Consider the impact of seasonal influenza (what we call “the flu”) in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that an average of 28.6 million individuals have become ill from the flu each year since 2010. An average of 37,400 individuals died each year in that span, including an estimated 61,000 deaths last year. Did...

Friday 1/3/19 (Amsterdam)

Classic snacks at Albert Hynh Market. FRESH tender Stroopwafels, totally unlike cold ones. Carmel is always better warm anyways. And crisp little pancake Poffertjies with powdered sugar. Lunch at Bhatti Pasal Nepalese near Rembrandt Square. Delicious Chicken Chowmein with curry flavors, dry fried. Sekuwa BBQ chicken with furandana (crispy beaten rice) and mint and tomato sauce. Afterwards, we ran into...

Bierbrasserie Cabrinus (Bruges, Belgium)

Flemish Carbonades (beef stew with onions and beer), sliced chicken with potato galette, steak with herb butter. Quite possibly the best restaurant in Bruges. While Mr A was climbing the Belfry, we jammed over here to make a ressie. Good thing, as shortly afterwards, all ressies were gone. Comfy, nice service, excellent food, probably our best meal so far.

New Years Eve 12/31/19 (Amsterdam)

Legal fireworks of all sizes, legal weed, open bottle policy on the streets – what could go wrong? At turns beautiful, cold, and frightening, New Years Eve in Amsterdam was something to behold. There was no big firework display at midnight but continuous and very loud fireworks from 6pm on kinda made up for it. We hung out in Dam...

Wednesday 1/1/20 (Amsterdam)

Bitterly cold New Years Day in Zaandam. But our visit to Zaanse Schans was an excellent one. The clog makers and cheese makers was very interesting with demonstrations, high quality photo ops, and samples. Did you know a wooden clog can be made in less then 10 minutes? And it was freaking hilarious when he slapped his own (enormous) wooden...

Cafe Sonneveld (Amsterdam)

“Small and loud,” said the Google review – and it was, but we still liked it. We weren’t familiar with the music but it sounded like a Dutch Octoberfest to us. Enjoyed our food – Round Steak, Stampot with meatball, and Pork Loin with pepper sauce. We also sprung for the bread tray with herb butter, olives, and French fry...

Sunday 12/29/19, London

We landed at 930am in London to find that even the horses in the fields had jackets on. It would be a cold but clear New Years week in Western Europe. A quick roast beef and roast chicken lunch at Marquis Cornwallis. Chicken in Europe is so succulent compared to American chicken. Why is that? And why are pubs so...

Monday 12/30/19, London

Natural History Museum – Mr A took a walk thru Hyde Park while the girls shopped for wool coats at Marks & Spencer. M&S had amazing selection, we won’t hesitate to shop there again. Except for the strength of the British pound – yikes! Add 30pct to the price in pounds to get USD. Making a 35 £ jacket (a...

Serenity is… (LAX)

Checking in 3 hours in advance, whisking thru the TSA Pre Check line, leisurely lunch at PF Changs, and a few hours in the KAL lounge before boarding. (get a points and miles card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve that gives you Priority Pass benefits) This was the last chance for PF Changs tho. The shrimp were doughy and the...
