Locks Cruise (Seattle)

Shout out for the Argosy Locks Cruise in Seattle! The day we went the tide was extremely low so the rise in the Lock was more than 20 feet. There was only room for the tour boat in the small lock – 6inch clearance on either side. I guess locks have become much more interesting to us since we started...

Sigh

Spending a relaxing day changing passwords. Why would someone hack my Facebook account then delete it? Makes no sense.

North Italia (One Paseo)

In our further adventures in the after-times return to normalcy, we checked out the patio at North Italia at the new Del Mar mall One Paseo. Even at 11 the whole place was buzzing with people. Note the especially long line at Parakeet – go at opening if you want to catch this one. North Italia has a huge wrap...

C2C (corner to corner) blanket

This is one of my favorite crochet patterns. Not only is it fast, it’s quite versatile. The rows are developed diagonally, increasing every row, then reducing every row, to create an overall square shape. I especially like to do a random assortment of harmonious color yarns and make it a “scrap” corner-to-corner blanket. This one is crimson – green –...

Qin West Noodle and HaiDiLao coming to San Diego

As we were strolling UTC mall La Jolla yesterday we ran across Qin West Noodle (opening soon). This place is already in LA’s Chinatown (near Ocean Seafood which I also wouldn’t mind going to again) with more locations near UCLA and UCI. Looks good!http://qinwestnoodle.com/  https://www.google.com/amp/s/sandiego.eater.com/platform/amp/2021/2/23/22297212/los-angeles-fast-casual-chinese-qin-west-noodle-westfield-utc-san-diego Reminds me of Xi’an Famous Foods, a regional Noodle shop in New York that opened...

Air travel 2021

“It’s so good to be back in our state”, said the lady in the bathroom stall next to mine. “Uh huh!” said her companion, agreeably. Covid doesn’t exist in airports. There’s no pandemic in the terminal. No 6ft separation in the security lineup. No distancing when Group 6 boards the plane. Every seat filled. Half the restaurants in the airport...

Mysterious Physics of a Black Hole

https://www.wired.com/story/new-snapshot-of-black-hole-reveals-its-mysterious-physics “However, what was lacking was insight into the process behind the powerful twin jets produced by the black hole gobbling up matter, ejecting a portion of the material falling into it away at nearly light speed. (The black hole at the center of our Milky Way is less ravenous, i.e., relatively quiet, compared to M87’s black hole.) For example,...

Ozempic hints for success

The coronavirus quarantine, constraints on movement, and nonstop webexes have pushed my borderline diabetes over the edge. But I found I was unable to up my Metformin dose without raising my blood pressure significantly. So my doctor put me on Ozempic 6 weeks ago, selling me hard on the weight loss aspect. Ozempic is not for everyone and dose matters....

Rocketman

Really enjoyed watching Rocketman the other day. If you have any interest in Elton John you will enjoy this movie, but the sex, drugs and extreme behavior is not for kids. But what a musical genius. And Taron Egerton is fantastic. His Wikipedia article (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elton_John) is a great guide to key performances, as is this Rolling Stone article. Start your...

https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/17/us/group-tests-positive-florida-bar/index.html “A group of 16 friends all tested positive for coronavirus after a night out at a recently reopened Florida bar. Three members of the group, who spoke to CNN’s Chris Cuomo Tuesday, said they want to remind the public that the pandemic is not over yet. “We want to raise awareness and get ahead of it,” Kat Layton told Cuomo. “We...

https://www.10news.com/news/coronavirus/san-diego-county-exceeds-community-outbreak-trigger “Thursday, community outbreaks rose to eight from June 11-17. A community outbreak is considered three or more confirmed cases from the same place. The community outbreaks were linked to three businesses, two restaurants, one private residence, one campground, and one social club, according to Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten. “People are gathering and not using facial coverings,” Wooten said....

NYT: How Humanity Has Unleashed a Flood of Zoonotic Diseases

From The New York Times: How Humanity Has Unleashed a Flood of Zoonotic Diseases “As we degrade animal habitats, reduce biodiversity and reach ever deeper into the wilderness for resources, we’re all but certain to encounter more diseases like Covid-19. Between 60 and 75 percent of emerging infectious diseases in humans come from other animals, [such as] rabies, Lyme, anthrax, mad cow disease, SARS,...

Social distancing is not enough

bendthecurve. #shelterinplace. #socialdistancingisnotenough “When a healthcare system gets overwhelmed, death rate goes up from something like 0.9% (Korea) to something like 3-4% (Hubei, parts of Lombardy).” “Italy death rate, worst is yet to come (lags case rate)” “US case count will exceed Italy’s in 5 days time” London and US (NY, Louisiana, Florida) still at 35pct daily increase due to...

Solve the Mask shortage

No, cotton masks aren’t as good as N95 masks, but they are much better than nothing if N95s aren’t available. Some Healthcare providers are accepting these. Could be used in the community too. Even imperfect barriers are better than nothing. Save the N95s for the sick and healthcare workers. And make cotton ones for when we run out 🙁 Here’s...

Slow the Coronavirus spread thru lock down or testing

Both Italy and South Korea were able to “bend the curve” of case rise from 35pct growth to 11pct growth, by different methods. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/03/italy-south-korea-differ-tackling-coronavirus-outbreak-200313062505781.html Lesson: country-wide action (lock down or test everyone) is required to slow the spread and avoid overwhelming hospitals. Lesson: must be sustained for many weeks (it took China 3 months). http://nrg.cs.ucl.ac.uk/mjh/covid19/
